Henry Owens strikes out seven

As I'm sure most of you have noticed by now, I like to check out other minor league teams when the Thunder are not playing. Usually it's the Lakewood BlueClaws (Phillies' Low-A) and whomever the BlueClaws are playing. That's been the case for the past three nights, when the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) were in town.

Truth be told, I requested these dates off months ago when I realized just how stocked Greenville was going to be. Among the names on that roster are: Blake Swihart, Garin Cecchini, Jordan Weems, Keury De La Cruz, Jose Vinicio, Matt Barnes (until yesterday) and last night's starter, Henry Owens.

Owens, the 36th pick in last year's draft, was received by Boston as compensation for Victor Martinez signing with the Tigers. He's a lanky left-hander with a low-90s heater, two curveballs (one in the mid-70s, the other in the mid-60s) and a change-up. He fanned seven hitters in four innings last night, including the final three he faced.

He ran into control problems along the way, as reflected by the three walks he issued, but was able to exploit Lakewood's considerably raw lineup and all its swing-and-miss potential. Here, for your viewing pleasure, are those seven strikeouts from Mr. Owens.
