Around the System - June 2-4

Triple-A: Durham 4, Scranton 0; Durham 11, Scranton 3; Gwinnett 3, Scranton 2

Wednesday:
Dustin Moseley allowed three runs over six innings, and the Yankees couldn't touch the Bulls' combination of Richard De Los Santos, Mike Ekstrom and Dale Thayer, who held Scranton to just five hits. Greg Golson and Colin Curtis each had doubles in this loss.

Thursday: Tim Redding, Jason Hirsh and Mark Melancon got lit up, and the Yankees' bats couldn't do much against Carlos Hernandez and a trio of Durham relievers. Reegie Corona and Reid Gorecki had two hits apiece, and one of Gorecki's hits was a triple. Gorecki and David Winfree had Scranton's RBIs.

Friday: Romulo Sanchez gave up just two earned runs over five fine innings, but once again the Scranton bats were nearly silent. Spots four through seven in the Yankees' lineup went hitless, and nobody had more than one knock. Reegie Corona had the lone extra-base hit, a double. Corona and Nunez had the RBIs. Former Yankees farmhand Mike Dunn closed it out for Gwinnett.

Double-A: Trenton 1, Portland 0; Portland 10, Trenton 7; Richmond 2, Trenton 1

Wednesday: David Phelps was brilliant once again, outdueling the equally excellent Robert Coello for seven innings of four-hit baseball. The Thunder fanned 11 times against Portland's starter, something they hadn't done since August of last year -- against Pedro Martinez. Dan Brewer's RBI grounder in the ninth drove home the winning tally. Austin Romine went 2-for-4.

Thursday: Kevin Whelan couldn't handle a two-run lead in the ninth, giving up a three-run home run to Luis Exposito that deflated the crowd at Waterfront Park and keeping the Thunder from a sweep of the Sea Dogs. Wilkins Arias also gave up a two-run homer to Yamaico Navarro in the ninth. Brandon Laird had a double and a long home run, and Dan Brewer added a two-run shot of his own. Jorge Vazquez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Marcos Vechionacci quietly went 4-for-4.

Friday: Lefty Clayton Tanner got 17 grounders from the Thunder hitters, sending them to their second straight loss for the first time since early May. The Flying Squirrels also held Austin Romine and Brandon Laird hitless, something that hadn't been accomplished since May 14. Dan Brewer, Jorge Vazquez and Edwar Gonzalez had the Thunder's hits in the loss.

High-A: Tampa 10, St. Lucie 1

Wednesday:
At the risk of jinxing him, I'm going to say it: Andrew Brackman has turned a corner. The big man fanned seven and walked just one over five scoreless innings against the Mets, giving him five stellar starts in his last six. During that time, he's fanned 26 against five walks and has allowed just five earned runs. As for the offense, the trio of Brad Suttle, Melky Mesa and Addison Maruszak went 10-for-24 with four doubles, six RBIs and seven runs scored.

Low-A: Charleston 5, Hickory 4; Charleston 6, Hickory 2; Hickory 5, Charleston 3

Wednesday: Slade Heathcott notched a walk-off single, making Ryan Flannery a winner in the process. For the record, that's a first-rounder getting a hit to give a win to a 47th-rounder, pretty cool. Sean Black started and gave up one earned run over 5 2/3 innings while fanning seven against one walk. Kelvin Castro was 2-for-2 with a double and a triple, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Jimmy Paredes and Zoilo Almonte also swiped a bag apiece.

Thursday: Jairo Heredia pitched five innings of one-hit baseball, and Kyle Higashioka was 3-for-4. Zoilo Almonte had a double and two RBIs in the win. The 1-2 combination of Slade Heathcott and J.R. Murphy was 3-for-9 with two runs scored and an RBI. Murphy also stole a base. Ryan Acosta and Dickson Marquez closed things out for Black.

Friday: Despite getting three hits from Rob Lyerly and two-hit efforts from Slade Heathcott, J.R. Murphy and Ray Kruml, the RiverDogs managed just four runs against Neil Ramirez and Joseph Ortiz. Murphy had two doubles, and Heathcott added a two-bagger in the loss. Jose Ramirez gave up four runs over 5 1/3, continuing his fall back to earth after a hot start to the season.

Dominican Summer League 1 Yankees 12, Giants 6; Yankees 5, Marlins 0

Friday: The combination of Cristofer Cabrera, Jose Pena, Victor Beriguete and Melvin Croussett held the Marlins scoreless on just four hits. That quartet struck out 10, but also walked half a dozen. Second baseman Claudio Custudio was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Yeicok Calderon also added two hits -- including a longball -- and Daniel Lopez also had a pair of knocks.

Wednesday: Angel Rincon started and went four scoreless innings, but Warlin Jimenez pitched the fifth and sixth and picked up the win. Claudio Custudio and Jorge Alcantara each went deep -- Custudio's blast was a two-run shot. Isaias Tejeda doubled twice, and Edwin Beard contributed a third two-base hit. Yeicok Calderon was 3-for-4.

Dominican Summer League 2 Dodgers 5, Yankees 4; Yankees 13, Pirates 12

Friday: Fernando Perez went 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two walks, and Rafael Polo also put together a 3-for-6 effort with two runs and three RBIs in the Yankees' slugfest win over the Buccos. Amazingly, all of the hits from Perez and Polo were singles. Ravel Santana and Sandy Brito notched two hits apiece. Santana, Melvin Aquino and Eladio Moronta each had a double.

Wednesday: Eladio Moronta and Melvin Aquino each notched two-hit efforts, but the Yankees couldn't outlast the DSL Dodgers. Aquino added two runs and three RBIs, all of which came on a three-run home run. Rafael Polo and Fernando Perez each stole a base. Ramon Rodriguez allowed four runs (one earned) in three innings for the loss.
